Tacoma Japanese American Day of Remembrance 2017
On May 17-18, 1942, 870 people of Japanese ancestrymany of them American citizensleft Tacoma from Union Station. Because of wartime hysteria and prejudice, they were forcibly removed to Pinedale Assembly Center near Fresno, California by order of the federal government. Only one out of seven (approximately) returned to Tacoma after the war.

This series of events will commemorate the days that the Japanese Americans left Tacoma, honoring those who built and lived in a vibrant Japantown, as well as those who inherited that history.

Co-sponsored by local writer Tamiko Nimura and historian Michael Sullivan, as well as the Washington State History Museum and the Broadway Center.
